Skilled Independent
Permanent residence
No sponsor, no state nomination. You are invited on your points alone.
Highest cut-off of the three — you are competing against everyone.
Live and work anywhere in Australia.
SUBCLASS 190
Skilled Nominated
Permanent residence
A state or territory nominates you, and you commit to living there.
Nomination adds 5 points.
Usually a two-year commitment to that state.
SUBCLASS 491
Skilled Work Regional
Provisional — 5 years
A regional area nominates you, or an eligible relative sponsors you.
Adds 15 points — the biggest single lift available.
Live and work in a designated regional area, then apply for permanent residence through subclass 191.
How it actually goes
Seven steps, in this order

Check your occupation
It has to be on the right skilled list for the visa you want. If it is not, nothing else matters — and we tell you that on day one.

Skills assessment
The assessing body for your field confirms your qualification and experience meet the Australian standard.

English test
IELTS, PTE or equivalent. Competent English is the minimum; a higher score is worth real points.

Count your points honestly
Age, English, qualifications, experience, partner. We work it out before you spend anything on tests or assessments.
05
Lodge the EOI
An Expression of Interest in SkillSelect. This is not an application — it puts you in the pool.
06
Wait for the invitation
Rounds are held periodically. A high score is invited sooner. Some occupations move quickly, others do not move at all.
07
File the visa
Sixty days from the invitation. Documents, police checks, medicals, forms — this is the part that has to be right.

What nobody can promise you
An Expression of Interest is not an application, and an invitation is not a right. Australia invites the highest scores first, and the cut-off moves every round — in some occupations it barely moves at all. Anyone who tells you they can guarantee an invitation, or offers to buy you points, is lying to you, and it is the kind of lie that ends in a fraud finding and a ban.
What we will tell you is where you actually stand. If your score is not competitive for your occupation, we say so before you pay for a skills assessment or an English test — because that is the money most people waste.
The rules are changing
Australia consulted on a rewrite of the points test during 2026. Age bands, English weighting, partner points and the pass mark are all under review, and the changes are not expected to commence before 2027.
Nothing on this page is a substitute for the official source. Requirements, points and occupation lists are published at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au and can change without notice. We check it on every file, and so should you.

Your points estimate costs nothing here, and we would rather you heard a hard answer from us than spent two hundred thousand rupees finding it out yourself.
